Two Boxers Showing Their Playful Side
First introduced in Germany, the Boxer has been bred to be large in size, stocky, and short-haired. Boxers are brachycephalic (meaning they have broad, short skulls) and have a square muzzle. They typically have an underbite (prognathism), very strong jaws and a powerful bite, which helps them hang on to large prey. The Boxer is part of the Molosser group of dogs and was bred from the English Bulldog and Bullenbeisser (now extinct).
Boxers were first featured in a dog show for St. Bernards at Munich in 1895. The first Boxer club was founded the following year. Boxers are the sixth most popular breed of dog in the United States (according to 2009 American Kennel Club statistics).
